Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has grant programs that are available for Michigan counties and municipalities to pursue while seeking to improve their indoor and outdoor park and recreation assets and land acquisition initiatives. The three DNR Recreation Grant Programs: Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, Land and Water Conservation Fund, and Recreation Passport. These three programs all differ in what a county or municipality can use them for, the match ratio required when seeking awards through them, and the size of awards they may yield.

Through the development process for Elevating the Easter Upper Peninsula, we found that many municipalities in the region have struggled to obtain DNR grants, ever since EUPRPDC has made a concentrated effort to encourage and assist our communities to develop 5-year Recreation Plans. An approved plan, in addition to meeting some of the requirements for Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grants, clarifies the goals and strategies for recreation development for your community.
